Clinton, Sanders say King’s legacy is alive
After the Vermont senator hit Clinton on her ties to Wall Street during the debate Sunday, Clinton launched into an attack centered on Sanders’s previous criticisms of Obama, a political play many strategists believe was meant to sway black voters in SC. Sanders, I-Vt., said Sunday evening during a debate with his rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Martin O’Malley in SC.
“I understand that this is the hardest job in the world”.
Asked by Mitchell if Sanders could give Clinton “a run for her money in South Carolina”, Cillizza said, “Yeah”.
“What this is really about is not the rational way to go forward”, Sanders said as he responded to Clinton’s argument that his health care plans would reignite a divisive political battle.
She touted the Affordable Care Act as a “path to universal health care” and pledged to defend, build and improve the law. According to Vox, he racked up about 14 minutes of speaking time, compared to almost a half hour each for Clinton and Sanders.
Gone were her mentions of differences with the president over Syria, trade, and immigration.
“To tear it up and start over again …”
“My relationship with him – it’s interesting”, Clinton said to laughs in the debate hall.
Ninety people a day die from gun violence in this country, she noted, before going on to attack Sanders record on the Second Amendment, methodically reciting a series of his congressional votes.
“He has voted with the NRA (National Rifle Association), with the gun lobby numerous times”, including against legislation mandating background checks for gun sales, she declared. She welcomed Sanders’s change of stance on gun-manufacturer immunity. “Senator Sanders called him weak, disappointing”, she said. We’ve had a city in the united States of America, where the population, which is poor in many ways, and majority african-american, has been drinking and bathing in lead-contaminated water. YouTube and its parent, Google, promoted a live-stream of the debate on Sunday night.
“The flag is down but we are still here because that flag was just one piece of something bigger”, Clinton said. “However it is Sanders’s success that has jostled team Clinton”.
“We’re at least having a vigorous debate about reining in Wall Street”, she declared.
Clinton aides said Sanders, a self-identified democratic socialist who casts himself as above politics as usual, was undermining Obama’s achievements by questioning the effectiveness of his party.
“He needs to take her down a couple of pegs and I don’t think that happened last night, which in my book makes Hillary the victor”.
This was a clear shift from the prohibitive Democratic favorite who said last fall she wasn’t running for anybody’s third term. “Sanders fared better country-wide than he did in these states, earning 42% approval in Iowa but just 15% in New Hampshire”.
If Republicans could nominate Trump or Cruz, why couldn’t Democrats counter with Sanders?
For what it’s worth, O’Malley correctly pointed out that he didn’t have as much of an opportunity to talk as Clinton or Sanders.
“Democrats doubled down on the extreme and failed policies of the current administration”. Conservatives appear convinced that Clinton would be a tougher candidate, but it’s possible they’re miscalculating.
