Mexico has opened a money laundering investigation into the actress who set up an October meeting between actor Sean Penn and notorious drug lord and prison escapee Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Reuters reported.
Kate Del Castillo finally addressed everyone after news broke that she was involved with “El Chapo” while he was a fugitive.
Investigators are looking into communications between the actress, Guzman and his lawyer that included comments like “we’re in business” and “we’re in this together”, Gomez said.
Guzman is facing extradition to the U.S. Gomez said Mexico had made a decision to extradite Guzman, though other officials have said the process could take months.
Gomez said Penn now is not under investigation, nor is director Oliver Stone, whose name has been mentioned among several Hollywood filmmakers rumored to be on the producers’ wish list. Her statement came on the same day that her alleged text messages exchange with the drug lord were leaked. He was arrested this month after an escape from a maximum-security prison that embarrassed the Mexican government.
Meanwhile, Mexican prison officials in charge of preventing Guzman from escaping incarceration for a third time are taking extreme measures, according to a report in the El Universal newspaper.
Prosecutors have called Del Castillo, a 43-year-old US-Mexican TV star, to testify as a witness over her links to Guzman, 58. On Twitter, she’s said many people are making up “items they think will make good stories”. Such a financial transaction, if proven, would constitute money laundering, she said.
