Van Gaal: You want me to respond to Scholes?
Van Gaal’s team were shorn of endeavour and creativity as they struggled against their third-tier opponents at Old Trafford, ending the game with just two shots on target – one of which was Wayne Rooney’s converted 93rd-minute penalty.
He said: “There are matches that I have enjoyed and there are also matches where I’m very bored or angry because we are not disorganizing our opponent’s defense”. “There are many reasons to leave the stadium at the last minute”.
The match could have been drawn but it took a moment of madness from Seffield United to turn the tie around in favour of United in the dying minute of the game. Do you know that my primary concern is defence?
“Every time you come to Old Trafford – this is what you see. But we are in the next round”.
The Germany global picked up a knee injury in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United at the weekend and has consequently been ruled out of the trip to St James’ Park.
United have now won back-to-back games after an eight-match winless run and will be hoping this is the start of a run that will bring them a first FA Cup success since 2004, but van Gaal accepts there is room for improvement.
Scholes, in his role as pundit on BT sport, has commented that Manchester United fans, and players, look bored playing under the Dutchman.
“The supporters have got right behind the players and there is a togetherness at the football club”.
However, United again faced criticism for their style of play, with former midfielder Paul Scholes blasting the performance as “negative”.
“When you look at the players they were bored too”. “They defended with 10 behind the ball”.
Van Gaal has also made it clear Adnan Januzaj will not feature in Monday’s Under-21 clash with Reading.
“We won this match and that’s the most important thing”. “I am not concerned (about defending more than attacking). You never know”, he said.
“We don’t see anything else, and he constantly comes out and says he’s happy with his team, he’s happy with the way they’ve played”.
“When there is a chance to make the selection better then we shall do it, but I don’t think we shall do that”.
Van Gaal has also been criticised for not getting off of his seat and encouraging players from the touchline, but the manager said he believed communication through the week was more effective.
