Probation violation hearing set in Texas for Ethan Couch
If Couch is found to have violated his probation and his case in transferred, he could face about four months in an adult prison. After being convicted of four counts of intoxication manslaughter, and two counts of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury, Ethan was sentenced to therapy and 10 years probation.
Brown made the comments after a brief hearing Tuesday in juvenile court that was scheduled to determine whether Couch, who remains in a Mexico City detention facility, violated his probation and if the case should be transferred to adult court. The U.S. Marshals Service have joined the search for Couch, a teenager who was serving probation for killing four people in a 2013 drunken-driving wreck after invoking the “affluenza” defense, an argument that his wealthy parents coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility.
“Mothers Against Drunk Driving” has gathered more than 40,000 signatures to transfer 18-year-old Ethan Couch’s case out of juvenile court.
Representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers will be present at Tuesday’s hearing.
Ethan Couch and his mother, Tonya, fled the U.S.in late November after a video surfaced showing what appeared to be Ethan at a party where people were drinking alcohol. The 48-year-old was released on bond last week in Texas.
The condition is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association.
The ruling outraged prosecutors who had called for him to face detention time.
Attorneys for Ethan Couch said Tuesday that the 18-year-old is dropping his deportation fight in Mexico as they investigate whether he fled there or was taken unwillingly.
Couch received no jail time, but was placed on probation.
Law enforcement officials believe the mother and son had a going away party shortly before driving across the border in her pickup truck, making their way to Puerto Vallarta.
When the pair was arrested, Ethan Couch appeared to have tried to disguise himself by dyeing his blond hair black and his beard brown, according to investigators.
Authorities have previously said they had no evidence Fred Couch was involved in helping Tonya and Ethan Couch flee.
