Twin toddlers, grandparents killed in house fire
Firefighters arrived at the house in Chillum, about six miles north of Washington, just after 2 a.m., the Prince George’s County fire chief, Marc Bashoor, said.
With ladders and hoses freezing in the bitter cold, the firefighters fought their way into the burning building and found the 2-year-old twins, identified as Anna and Israel Omijie, nearly immediately.
Fire officials say five people escaped uninjured when a tree fell on their house in Clinton.
Despite the difficulties, he said crews were able to reach those inside “pretty quickly”, but said their injuries were “severe”.
Grandparents of Nigerian descent and the twin children of their son have died in a fire disaster in Maryland, United States of America, Per Second News is reporting. Officials said in a press conference that all seven people are related.
Right now investigators are trying to determine the cause of the tragedy.
“I am sorry to say there is so far no evidence of a smoke alarm in the home”, Bashoor said.
Mark Brady, a spokesman for the county’s fire department, posted a Twitter message saying the two adults and two toddlers “have succumbed to injuries”. Damage is estimated at $250,000.
“When you have children involved it’s tough on the community, it’s tough on these families, obviously, and tough on the fire service”, Bashoor said.
This is the one year anniversary of an Annapolis house fire that left four children and their grandparents dead.
Firefighters plan to return to the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon to knock on doors and check smoke alarms, he said.
