Twitter disruption silences swaths of US, Europe for hours
It said the issue that was reported yesterday had been resolved, and added it was “working towards a resolution” of problems reported earlier today.
The company’s developer-facing monitoring confirms that four of the five public APIs are experiencing either “performance issues” or ‘service disruption’.
Twitter service appeared to be restored Tuesday after a worldwide outage took the social media site periodically offline, the Associated Press reported.
While the mobile app was able to load user profiles, timeline feeds for certain pages were sporadically-updated.
Two hours after the outage occurred, Twitter had worked out a lot of the kinks plaguing the site. Since its web portal doors opened, Twitter has experienced regular outages with numerous users being shown the “over capacity” error message.
According to DownDetector, the problem began around 3:30 a.m. ET, and was largely contained to the United Kingdom and Europe, though reports tip US disturbances, as well.
However, the issues became less frequent in recent years and last time such problem was seen in 2014 when Twitter was down for about 45 minutes. Both Twitter’s Internet and mobile services began experiencing outages concentrated in northern Europe around 0820 GMT.
The string of service problems though poses a unique challenge for Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who has long struggled to convert the site’s user base into profit for its investors, even announcing a major staff reduction at the end of past year. On Friday, there was a 20-minute disruption. The outage continued in many parts of the world. Several speculated that the service interruptions were caused by hacking, but there hasn’t been any information to support that suspicion.
Twitter has not confirmed the source of the outage.
