Leonardo DiCaprio on cloud nine following Oscar nod
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, admitted it was a disappointing situation.
DiCaprio is considered Variety’s most likely to take home Best Actor, though the thought of the 41-year-old ever bringing home an Oscar seems to be pure wishful thinking to most at this point.
Hollywood’s darling was nominated for the fourth time in five years for her portrayal of Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano in David O. Russel’s Joy.
“I don’t think anybody could possibly say he doesn’t deserve it. It’s not how I decide on what are the great performances in film – the Oscars are a privilege and they’re an extra thing on top”, Gleeson said.
The film – a biopic of hip hop group N.W.A – was widely praised by critics and had been expected to sweep the board when the nominations for the Academy Awards were announced on Thursday (14.01.16). Other omissions include Idris Elba, Oscar Isaac, and many more.
Sylvester Stallone – widely seen as a sentimental favorite – received a nod for best supporting actor for “Creed”, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa. The two were well-received and were surprisingly good films, but unfortunately, they were not given any recognition. The actor said, “I’m incredibly grateful to the Academy for this nomination – particularly in a year with so many brilliant films and performances”.
Matt Damon plays NASA astronaut Mark Watney in “The Martian”, which has been nominated for six Oscars. She told ABC station KABC-TV in Los Angeles, “We are being louder and louder and we are going to continue this conversation and we’re going to do more than just talk”.
The best actress field is led by favorite Brie Larson for “Room”, along with Lawrence, Blanchett (her seventh nod), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) and Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”).
The race is now on for the coveted Oscars, to be handed out on February 28 at a star-studded ceremony hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
The film is leading the running for the Oscars, with 12 nominations, including best picture, director for Alejandro G. Inarritu and best supporting actor for Tom Hardy.
Another first-time nominee is Adam McKay, who made the transition from comedies to drama with the heralded film The Big Short.
