Ex-Boyfriend Kills Two SUNY Geneseo Students, Then Himself
Colin Kingston was reportedly distraught following a breakup with his girlfriend, 21-year-old Kelsey Annese, when he allegedly stabbed her to death at a home in Geneseo, New York, using a “large knife” on January 17.
The father called police, who went to Annese’s residence on the second-floor of a house converted into apartments that were mostly occupied by members of the women’s basketball team, Szczesniak said.
The Geneseo Police Department reported that three people had died on Sunday in off-campus housing near the State University of NY at Geneseo. Law enforcement was undertaking overnight parking enforcment, and there were several tickets issued at 5:30 a.m., Szczesniak said.
“We don’t know what he was thinking as he entered the place, we certainly don’t know what his intentions were when he entered that room”, said Szczesniak.
None of those involved had a police record.
“Kelsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players not because of anything she will have her name next to in the record book, but because of the type of person she was”, Hemer said. We are deeply saddened to report that the three individuals were identified as Kelsey Annese, Matthew Hutchinson and Colin Kingston. He added that Kingston had recently made suicidal comments, and that he had no criminal history.
“We… believe that this is a situation where Mr. Kingston and Ms. Annese had been in a long relationship and recently had broken up”, said Szczesniak.
It was unclear what the relationship between Hutchinson and Annese was, but Szczesniak said it appeared that Kingston found them together before he allegedly killed them.
“We have experienced a awful tragedy in Geneseo today involving members of our community”, SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles stated in a release after the SUNY double murder suicide became public.
Colin Kingston then turned the knife on himself and committed suicide, authorities said.
Hutchinson took up hockey at age 9 and played defense for the Geneseo Knights, according to his athlete bio.
The flag at College Circle has been lowered to half staff, a remembrance service is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday, and classes for the spring semester will start Tuesday as scheduled. “He was a guy who you’d say ‘wow, he is really making a difference in the world.’ He is an inspiration for taking on the things he did while going to school full time”.
He said Hutchinson was a big part of the local hockey community and among the upper echelon of firefighters at the department, which he joined in 2012. He was majoring in geography with a business studies minor.
“She overcame odds and not only made the team but worked her way up to earn the role as captain going into her senior year”.
His son, Colin, a 2009 graduate of Geneseo High School and a 2013 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, was working at the farm at the time of his death, according to his LinkedIn page.
