Bus driver said he was exhausted before deadly crash
Two people are dead and 18 injured after a Greyhound bus overturned in San Jose, California on Tuesday morning.
A CHP officer told KTVU that investigators would be on the scene for about eight hours, which would affect the carpool lanes in both directions of 101.
A Greyhound spokeswoman said she was looking into the matter and didn’t immediately confirm it was a Greyhound bus.
San Jose fire Capt. Christopher Salcido said there were 20 people on board the bus, including the driver.
The CHP log stated the bus was on its side.
Five of those wounded suffered life-threatening injuries, the department said, and were taken to local trauma centers.
A Greyhound spokesperson reported that bus 86558 was on schedule from LA to SF, with stops in San Jose and Oakland.
KRON 4’s Will Tran spoke with passengers about the terrifying moments when the bus overturned in the video above.
The ensuing crash investigation is expected to involve Greyhound as well as the California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, which Brazil said was summoned to the area from San Luis Obispo. Ehlers said the driver also appeared to be nodding off at the wheel. Four of the injured were transported to area hospitals.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victims, but Antonio Olivera, of San Francisco, said he was notified by the Santa Clara County coroner’s office that his mother, Fyle Olivera, 51, died after being ejected from the bus.
A passenger, who spoke to KTVU anonymously, accused the bus driver of falling asleep and said the vehicle was weaving back and forth before the accident. A passenger said the bus was half full with 20 passengers inside.
