Bill Clinton: Democrats need a candidate who can implement their ideas
At one final point in the debate, Clinton vowed not to raise taxes on middle class Americans if she is elected president.
The Clinton campaign tried to coexist with Sanders previous year, when his candidacy seemed more quixotic than it does today.
Thursday, the Sanders campaign launched its most robust outreach effort among black voters, kicking off a tour of historically black colleges at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Exact dates for the tour haven’t been announced.
Clinton has been criticizing Sanders’s vote for the 2005 bill since October, but her criticisms-and his desire to shore up his credibility with on an issue that resonates with many Democratic primary voters-gained new urgency as Sanders gained on Clinton in the polls. Clinton held a 30-point lead nationally as recently as last month, but is now ahead of Sanders by just single digits.
The former secretary of state is fighting to regain her lead in the race, with polls show Sanders gaining traction in Iowa and New Hampshire. It must be kept in mind that SC holds the first-in-the-South Democratic primary on Saturday, Feb. 27. One, Sanders says looking straight into the camera, “says it is okay to take million from big banks and then tell him what to do”, a not-very-subtle jab at Clinton.
“I think you nailed that”, she admitted.
Sanders, meanwhile, focused on his involvement in the civil rights movement, criminal justice proposals and a call for greater gun control.
Among women, 56 percent said it did not matter, while another 21 percent said it would hurt Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the election.
“We’re really at the front end of the process for states beyond Iowa and New Hampshire”, said Sanders adviser Tad Devine. “I said, ‘Hillary, because of the things that have happened to me in my life, I’ve met some of the most talented people of my generation in politics”. But they are firing back at Sanders on guns, health care and other issues in a way that underscores their concern about the dangers of a protracted nomination contest.
In New Hampshire, some people said that while Bill Clinton was still a compelling messenger for his wife, they just weren’t sold on her quite yet. But Brock’s group is allowed to coordinate directly with the Clinton campaign and has mobilized against Sanders before, often doing the messy work that the Clinton team avoids doing itself. The impression Clinton and her insurgent challenger, Sanders make on Sunday could presage their performance on February 1.
Bill Clinton kept a low profile in his wife’s presidential campaign until last week, when he began hitting the campaign trail on her behalf.
She had a standout performance at the first debate but stumbled some in the second and third debates by invoking the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to explain her relationship with Wall Street and saying the U.S.is “finally where we need to be” on fighting the Islamic State, referring to arming rebels in Syria.
