Twitter hit by sporadic outages in many parts of globe
Twitter now seems to be back in full service at most locations, but as of this writing, the company’s status page still reads: “Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter”.
“We reverted the change, which fixed the issue”, Twitter said in a statement.
Twitter confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the outage users experienced earlier in the day is over. The Wall Street Journal called it “a major interruption… with some users unable to log on to the social-media service for more than two hours”. Its social media rivals Facebook and Instagram have also had to deal with periodic shutdowns. The website downdetector.com suggested the outage started around 8 a.m. GMT.
Now that Twitter seems to be working again for most users, people are catching up and tweeting about debacle.
The issue apparently affected users worldwide, with British and Indian users first to report problems.
“It [the outage] doesn’t materially impact Twitter, but it’s another reminder in the headlines”, he told City A.M. “I think you’ve got no meaning catalyst on the horizon [for growth]”.
The Twitter Support account also acknowledged the issues in a tweet posted before 4 am EST, but had not issued an update as of late morning.
It was unclear how widespread the outages were, but by mid-morning on the East Coast, desktop and mobile versions of Twitter appeared to be working.
Around that time, the site announced on its developer page that users were having problems.
The site has suffered several service disruptions so far this year.
On Monday, some users could not access the service on mobile and web for about 10 minutes.
