Is Winter Coming? Monday Edition: DC Could Experience a ‘Major Snowstorm’
Road crews and law enforcement officials are asking people to stay off the roads if possible, as snow and ice cover many highways and rural roads across the quad state area.
Jersey Shore residents also should prepare for some potential coastal flooding that would also be affected by a full moon.
Where the snow becomes wet in nature, the weight of the snow and strength of the wind could lead to downed trees and power outages.
On Friday, the wintry part of storm will focus on the mid-Atlantic region.
If the storm track shifts further west, that could cause snow to mix with or change to sleet and rain across eastern Long Island.
“Snow, sleet, rain, freezing rain”.
AccuWeather forecasts now predict 6-10 inches of snow falling Friday afternoon into Saturday in York, but Kines said he wouldn’t be surprised to see that number go up or down, as York is now right on the northern edge of the storm’s main path. That said, heavy snowfall is looking increasingly likely from the Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic States and possibly the Northeast. He added, however, that there are several different possibilities as to how the storm will behave.
In that time it will likely dump a sizeable amount of water along its path – which looks likely to center on Virginia.
While the track of the storm was still not immediately clear, snow is expected to start in the central plains on Thursday then move into the northeast corridor. With cold air in place the potential certainly exists for a sizable snow storm in New England. Baltimore and Washington, D.C., both saw their first measurable snowfall, meaning at least 0.1 inches of snow, of the season just this Sunday, Jan. 17.
If it continues tracking the way it is, he expects Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area to get hit the hardest.
If Winter Storm Jonas develops into a major storm late this week, many of these snowfall deficits will be significantly reduced, if not eliminated.
