Eagles quarterback coach Ryan Day set to join Chip Kelly’s 49ers staff
The 49ers hired the former Eagles coach on Thursday, finding the leader CEO Jed York is counting on to turn things around for his once-proud franchise.
Kelly who had been in the running, alongside New York Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin was chosen after an announcement from Coughlin was made, stating that he would withdraw his name from consideration.
What bodes well for Kelly is that he will have former Eagles executive Tom Gamble working 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.
Kelly was 26-21 in three seasons with the Eagles after signing a five-year, $32.5 million contract to leave the University of OR in 2013.
Pederson started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999 and began his National Football League coaching career as an assistant under Andy Reid in Philadelphia in 2009.
Who would be the greatest gainer with Chip Kelly appointed as San Fransisco 49ers head coach? That experiment failed miserably as Kelly ended his tenure in the City of Brotherly Love with just six wins.
The craziest part about the hire, however, is that Kelly may have been the one pushing for the 49ers job-because of Colin Kaepernick. With Tebow’s incredible proficiency in short-yardage situations, sources close to the Eagles said that Kelly wanted to make him something of a two-point conversion specialist. We believe strongly that he is the right man to get this team back to competing for championships. “Trent Baalke’s going to handle the draft, and Chip Kelly is going to coach the football team”, Kiper said on a conference call.
So, gut reaction of course is that Kelly has his guy to run his system in place and Kaepernick won’t hit the market, now it’s just up to Kelly and the 49ers’ front office to make that decision final.
“Chip possesses all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach”, Baalke said in a statement. The biggest challenge Kelly faces for thriving at the 49ers is to find the right quarterback.
‘Even ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith sent a message to the “Mike & Mike” morning show asking if someone could explain to him the 49ers rationale for the hire.
The pair will likely work together in regards to the upcoming draft and free-agency, where San Francisco will need to invest heavily in offense in order to implement Kelly’s unique style of offense. Before joining the Eagles, Kelly was Oregon’s head coach (2009-12) after two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator (2007-08). He went 10-6 in both of his first two seasons at the helm.
Former 49ers running back Roger Craig’s reaction to Kelly’s hiring: “They got him!”
Kelly will be filling out his staff in coming days.
These seismic roster changes among other cuts Kelly made that season resulted in mediocrity, disappointment and an abundance of questions from the Eagles in 2015, ultimately leading to Kelly’s firing from the team. “Players excel when you let them naturally be who they are, and in my experience that hasn’t been important to him”.
