Home cooking: Giants hire Ben McAdoo to replace Coughlin
This time he has Vincent Rapisardi with him as they discuss New York Giants’ Ben McAdoo.
“It has been a privilege to work and learn under Coach Coughlin”, McAdoo said in a statement posted on the team’s website Thursday aftenroon. When he was hired, McAdoo was seen as a potential Coughlin successor because of the head coach’s advancing age, but his meteoric rise is remarkable.
Ben McAdoo was officially named Giants’ head coach on Thursday.
I think Ben is confident and not arrogant, co-owner Steve Tisch said.
Former New York Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo talks during a news conference announcing him as the new head coach of the NFL football team, Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, in East Rutherford, N.J. “I could’ve been happy with any one of them”.
“We’re not looking to rebuild, we’re looking to reload”, McAdoo said.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he remembers meeting McAdoo at an National Football League combine when McAdoo was a lower-level coach. McAdoo operated under that time system for two years, and he’s not about to change it.
The key to the Giants deciding to promote McAdoo was Manning. His second best year in terms of passing yards was in 2014, again under McAdoo.
With the 35-year-old Manning signed for four more seasons, it’s likely in the Giants’ best interest to keep him satisfied.
Manning certainly voiced his opinion that he wanted McAdoo to stay in the days after Tom Coughlin resigned. Keeping consistency and keeping that successful relationship together is obviously vital to the Giants future success.
“I am excited for the team because he is a great leader and teacher”, continued the QB. While McAdoo insisted the coaching staff is still fluid, reports indicate that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will return next season despite the blood curdling statistics. “I have to be comfortable in my own skin”. Amukamara missed five games this season, but still managed 63 tackles, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, a pick and 10 passes defended. He didn’t have the talent to work with. Bad as that sounds, it is one of only two. Sullivan is being promoted from the Giant’s quarterback coach position.
Maybe the most interesting piece to McAdoo’s staff could be former Miami Dolphin’s coach Joe Philbin. “I think it’s a good philosophy, it’s a good thing to have, and it’s a good concept”. First of all, McAdoo worked with Philbin in Green Bay, so the two are familiar to each other. To honor his mentor, McAdoo won’t. The Giants won six games in Coughlin’s first and last season. John Mara, Jerry and I were very focused on getting the right guy. “I felt it was time for the next chapter”. The two-time Super Bowl winning coach spent 12 seasons with the Giants, who granted the arch-rival and division foe permission to interview Coughlin. Leadership was the problem with this Giants team and it kept them from taking a 14-2 record into the playoffs.
“This is the capital of the world, and the football capital of the world and with that comes a certain amount of pressure, pressure I look forward to”, McAdoo told reporters, including CBS2’s Otis Livingston.
“I have been preparing for this moment my entire professional life, and without the guidance and support of many people, I would not be here right now”.
