Eagles hire Pederson as new head coach
When Reid was sacked by the Eagles after the 2012 season, Pederson moved with him to the Chiefs, taking over the offensive coordinator position, holding the job for three years.
The former head coach of the Detroit Lions – who last served as defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills two years ago – brings a big reputation with him.
Pederson had been serving as the offensive co-ordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, who were eliminated from the playoffs with a 27-20 defeat to the New England Patriots in the divisional round of the playoffs on Saturday.
Pederson started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999 when Reid was a first-year head coach and McNabb was a rookie.
Elsewhere at the presser Lurie spoke extensively about a list of 25 candidates the Eagles researched in their head coaching search, one aided by ESPN analyst and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski. Among them was two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin, who stepped down after 12 seasons coaching the New York Giants.
For Eagles fans, that would presumably include Pederson not bringing Reid’s time-management issues with him.
“One thing that I (learned from) Coach Reid over the years, being with him, is his consistency and his message of family first, of trusting one another and you can’t sacrifice hard work”, Pederson said. And they feel that they have confidence in me, and I’m going to show that same confidence and that same respect back.
Pederson, 47, will be officially introduced as the Eagles’ new coach at a press conference Tuesday.
Professional sports teams in the United States have this trend of hiring their former players to become coaches, and that is what exactly transpired during the Philadelphia Eagles coaching hunt. I expect the Eagles offense to falter with Reich making the calls and eventually will have a ton of injuries on the offensive line. We were also limited with the number of receivers; we had Jeremy Maclin out of the game at the time.
“You do it one player at a time, you do it one coach at a time”, he said. “And that’s the direction we will go”.
Pederson played for Don Shula, Mike Holmgren and Reid. That after a 2-14 finish the previous season.
Given that the Eagles aren’t completely devoid of talent, the expectation will be that Pederson and the staff he puts together will undergo a retooling process rather than a full rebuild.
Even if the Chiefs thought they had a better chance to recover an onside kick than stop Brady, they still should’ve attempted the onside kick with as much time as possible remaining in the game. “I think the people that I’ve been surrounded with in my career and being a part of championship organizations and understanding what that takes has prepared me for this opportunity”, he said.
-The Indianapolis Colts added quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer to their staff and retained Shawn Terlecky, the team announced.
