Israel to destroy home of teen accused of killing Jewish woman: Netanyahu
The appropriation, which Army Radio said would be announced shortly but was not immediately confirmed by the Israeli Defense Ministry which administers the West Bank, comes at a time of increased worldwide condemnation of settlement policy.
Brief video footage of the raid distributed by the Israeli military showed forces arriving at a home in darkness before entering and advancing into a bedroom, where it appears two people are sleeping.
In a bid to deter the violence, Israel has taken measures such as withholding the bodies of attackers and demolishing assailants’ homes, a measure rights activists say amounts to unjust collective punishment.
The woman killed was identified as Dafna Meir, a 38-year-old nurse and mother of six.
He again said Palestinian incitement was behind the wave of attacks.
Last year, Israel reacted angrily to European Union guidelines on specifically labeling goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, claiming it would bar the European Union from participating in any peace talks between Israel and Palestine. She was killed while three of her children were in the house, according to officials. None of her children was hurt.
The alleged attacker was shot in the leg by the head of security in Tekoa, but he managed to escape before being apprehended by Israeli security forces and is now in serious condition at a nearby hospital.
“We view Israeli settlement activity as illegitimate and counterproductive to the cause of peace”, spokesman John Kirby told reporters.
“Too much (Jewish) vigilantism goes unchecked, and at times there seems to be two standards of adherence to the rule of law, one for Israelis, and another for Palestinians”, Shapiro said in a speech at the annual meeting of the Institute for Strategic Studies in Tel Aviv. Such moves erode the territory Palestinians see as part of their future state, further complicating peace efforts.
In addition, Israel’s settlement project violates worldwide human rights law, in particular, Israel’s discriminatory policies against Palestinians that govern virtually every aspect of life in the area of the West Bank under Israel’s exclusive control, known as Area C, and that forcibly displace Palestinians while encouraging the growth of Jewish settlements.
“This government and previous Israeli governments have repeatedly expressed their support for a negotiated two-state solution – a solution that would involve both mutual recognition and separation”.
The report said the land, covering 154 hectares (380 acres), was in the fertile Jordan Valley close to Jericho, an area where Israel already has many settlement farms built on land Palestinians seek for their own state.
