Eagles avoid millions in buyout to Kelly

– The San Francisco 49ers Thursday announced Chip Kelly as the team’s new head coach.

The 49ers spoke to at least one player, defensive end Arik Armstead, about potentially hiring Kelly.

“After a thorough search, Trent and I are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new HeadCoach of the @49ers”, York tweeted. He has demonstrated the ability to be innovative everywhere he has coached and has had great success throughout his career.

Consider this, from a discussion I had with Shady McCoy (yes, the same guy who purportedly can’t stand Chip now) back in December 2013 on sports science: “It’s the small things you don’t think about: the nutrition, the sleep, the way we train”.

There will be plenty of offseason activity between now and then, but being I can’t wait for the 2016 season to arrive, I’m already looking forward to John Fox vs Chip Kelly 2016. We believe strongly that he is the right man to get this team back to competing for championships. He won 10 games in each of his first two seasons before going 6-9 in 2015 and being fired with one game remaining.

Head coaches hired by 49ers since the 1970 merger who entered the job with National Football League head-coaching experience, according to ESPN Stats & Info, with Dennis Erickson being the other.

The 36-year-old Day was hired by Kelly last year after former Eagles quarterback coach Bill Musgrave was hired to be the Oakland Raiders’ offensive coordinator. Kelly will not have the roster control he had in Philadelphia, instead, he’ll focus on honing the roster and just coaching games and trying to tally victories.

“I think he bit off a little bit more than he could chew over there”, former 49ers coach and NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci said.

“For this to work, both individuals have to be in sync, working together for the same goal and objective”. Kelly made a surprise signing last spring, plucking Tebow out of free agency and giving him a chance to be the team’s backup. And that’s the type of relationship that you have to have.

“I think their desire to win is very, very similar”, Ertz said. The Eagles averaged 26.9 points and 392.8 yards during his tenure. That’s not a disgusting record but shows you that Kelly is not a superhero coach on the biggest stage.

Along with guys like Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been mentioned as a possible cast-off superstar to come to Dallas and serve as Tony Romo’s backup quarterback. If this season turns out poorly, I don’t see Chip’s $6 million per year contract going anywhere.

The switch, noted by freelance reporter Mike Rosenberg, suggested someone thought Kelly’s hiring meant Kaepernick wasn’t destined to be an ex-49er. His ability to create plays with his athleticism and keep the opposing defenses on their toes are the hallmarks of what Kelly looks to do on offense.

“Guess I might have to start running right now to get in shape”, 49ers receiver Torry Smith wrote on Twitter after the announcement was made. Asked if he felt the need to apologize to his teammates, Jones said, “I feel the need to apologize to everyone”.

The new head coach will collaborate with them, if you will.

I guess 25% off his jerseys is about as good of a severance package as a player can ask for.

Kelly is not without his critiques though.
