Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Revenant’ Leads Oscar Nominations With 12 Nods
He’s been pipped to the Best Actor Oscar post three times – but despite being favorite to win this year’s Academy Award for his role in The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio reveals he’s not getting drawn into all the buzz. The Revenant actor had been nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1993 drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
For the second year in a row, all 20 acting nominees were white.
His competition includes fellow Globe victor Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, Emmy favorite Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo” and last year’s Best Actor victor Eddie Redmayne, nominated this year for “The Danish Girl”.
After the nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards were unveiled on early Thursday, January 14, the nominees quickly reacted to the honor. Eight movies will reportedly vie for Best Picture, including “Spotlight”, a film about Boston Globe’s coverage of sexual harassment of children by religious leaders.
The movie received five nods from the voters including score, editing and visual effects.
The nominations program this morning immediately sent shockwaves reverberating throughout the country because even the critically-acclaimed movies and performances that featured African Americans were shunned. The bio-epic about the rap group N.W.A. did receive one nomination for best screenplay, and that was on behalf of two Caucasian writers. Todd made a lovely and quiet love story with Carol.
In addition to “Straight Outta Compton”, Oscar snubs were delivered to Will Smith and Idris Elba, who were thought to be shoo-ins for nominations for their work in “Concussion” and “Beasts of No Nation”, respectively.
