Manatee Spotted in Chesapeake and Delaware Canal
Sightings of manatees – known as human-friendly and gentle sea creatures – are rare in the First State, McDerby said.
Delaware wildlife officials say that a 7-foot manatee was seen in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, as stated by ABC-2.
A woman contacted Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Natural Resources police Thursday afternoon after spotting the manatee in the marina, Cpl.
Officials warn boaters on the canal to watch out of the manatee.
Manatees are federally protected under both the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Boaters are asked to keep a safe distance away from the animal and proceed at a slow, no wake speed to avoid injuring the manatee.
If you’re heading out on the water this weekend then keep a look out for a possible manatee sighting.
News outlets had reported a manatee in the Chesapeake Bay earlier in the week.
