Actress breaks silence on “El Chapo” meeting
Meanwhile, one of El Chapo’s lawyers said Wednesday that Penn lied when he wrote in Rolling Stone that El Chapo had boasted of being the world’s biggest drug dealer.
Sean Penn’s recent article in Rolling Stone on his meeting with fugitive Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is certainly, if nothing else, a saga.
The newspaper said some of the messages were copied from an intercepted phone used by one of Guzman’s lawyers. El Chapo, however, was styled in the sort of get-up male models are often forcibly shoved down the runway wearing: a blue- and silver-striped paisley shirt. He didn’t doubt that Penn had met El Chapo, as a photo of the two of them evidences, but that elements of his journey to the druglord appear to defy logic. That was in part why Penn’s relationship to the Mexican actor was of interest to law enforcement, official said.
Mr. Penn was researching an article for Rolling Stone magazine and El Chapo seems to have been interested in having the influential American actor arrange for a film biography of his very colorful life.
The tone of El Chapo’s messages, the majority of which were sent via Blackberry Messenger, are that of a deeply dehydrated man trying to wring the last drops of water out of a crumpled Poland Springs bottle.
With its own communications network, and surveillance posts on the surrounding peaks, the rustic redoubt had everything the drug boss needed, but was hardly befitting of a mega-rich drug trafficker who was once on the Forbes list of billionaires. I wonder if Penn has done any research on the conditions of Mexican Prisons and whether he would enjoy playing the role of a real inmate in one for say ten years?
The interview was brokered by Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who was also on hand for the meeting. Figure out when you can come back, I hope it will be soon…
Mexican officials have said the meeting helped them track down Guzman, who was recaptured Friday following a bloody shooting with marines in the city of Los Mochis in Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa.
Inside Altiplano federal prison Joaquin El Chapo Guzman is on the move again. Mexican authorities have said they will extradit him to the U.S.
Deeply concerned that the world’s most notorious drug kingpin, Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman, could escape for a third time, Mexico has beefed up security at his prison, reinforcing the floor of his cell and placing a guard on his door 24/7.
They were also surprised to see the so-called “El Chapo” shirts trending all over social media. Del Castillo’s representatives did not respond to email requests to comment on the texts.
He declined to elaborate on his wider legal defense strategy, which is aimed at avoiding Guzman’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted on an array of charges. El Chapo sees himself as a businessman, as someone who took advantage of the only opportunities he had to support himself and his family, and his place in the drug business as ultimately replaceable-the demand will always be there, and so will the supply.
