49ers hire Chip Kelly: ‘Chip has a proven track record’
The NFL just became a more interesting place, and we have the San Francisco 49ers to thank for it. The league without Chip Kelly in 2016 would have been a bore.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly watches the action from the sidelines in the first half of an NFL football game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C. The San Francisco 49ers have hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach.
Hayne made the 49ers’ 53-man roster in September but was cut mid-season and signed to the practice squad before being restored to the active roster for the final two weeks of the season following a litany of injuries to the team’s running backs.
However, center Jason Kelce said Kelly had gone out of his way to make sure players stayed fresh and told WIP, “I can tell you this – training camp was a lot harder when we had Andy Reid than when we had Chip Kelly”. That distinction goes to embattled general manager Trent Baalke and Kelly’s confidant from the Eagles, Tom Gamble, who will be the team’s senior personnel executive. He has demonstrated the ability to be innovative everywhere he has coached and has had great success throughout his career.
“And look, he has his shortcomings – I’ve mentioned them”, Garafolo continued.
Now, the Kelly-Kaepernick pairing has indeed occurred, but with the 49ers.
Or did you not read last summer’s Washington Post feature that painted Kelly and his coaching methods as “Orwellian”, his demand that Eagles players provide daily urine samples to check their hydration levels while keeping track of their sleep patterns and heart rates? While the offence sputtered under Jim Tomsula last season, Kelly’s strategies would appear to better mesh with the skills of Kaepernick, who was benched last season amid speculation he wouldn’t be back with the team.
Kelly was not connected, at least publicly, to any of the NFL’s six other head-coaching vacancies after the Eagles fired him December 29.
“After a thorough search, Trent and I are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new HeadCoach of the @49ers”, York tweeted. However, his lack of people skills and the poor decisions he made when given control over the team’s personnel department ultimately led to his downfall. He said Kelly would see guys walking down the hallway and wouldn’t speak to them.
Kelly, who had already released explosive wide receiver DeSean Jackson the previous season, traded running back LeSean McCoy to Buffalo for linebacker Kiko Alonso and also shipped quarterback Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford. And while Kelly has his shortcomings, he also has a history of making quarterbacks more efficient. Now, we get to find out if his work with the Eagles was incomplete because he was stuck with statues at quarterback or if he was a socially dysfunctional know-it-all unable to adapt to the National Football League game and its players. Two hours after Tomsula produced a 5-11 season, the 49ers fired him. The Eagles, meanwhile, continue to seek a replacement for Kelly, however, all Action News has learned they are expected to hire Kansas City Chief offensive coordinator Doug Pederson. And I think Chip Kelly will be the same way. Loomis is confident the Saints will figure out whether they need to change Brees’ contract, which expires after next season and now counts about $30 million against the team’s salary cap. Fans were hoping for a big-name coach (Coughlin) or a hot, young coordinator (Adam Gase) to replace Kelly.
