Bromance over: Trump attacks Cruz, gets booed at Tea Party convention
Presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are fighting over who has the best Republican values to represent the GOP in the upcoming election for the White House. For Trump, Levin’s criticism was a rebuke from a wing of the Republican Party he needs in order to capture the Iowa caucuses, while Cruz’s comments represent his harshest attacks against a rival he once promised to “smother with love”.
Cruz, the Texas senator challenging billionaire businessman Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, contrasted his record with Trump’s at a high school in New Hampshire, the New York Times writes.
Just about 35 miles away in Washington, New Hampshire the business mogul’s biggest competition, Texas Senator Ted Cruz hosted a town hall event and spoke to reporters beforehand. He also derided the Texan, for a second day, on the recent disclosure of low-interest loans obtained from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc.in 2012 that weren’t noted in campaign finance reports at the time.
“Don’t listen to what any of us say on the campaign trail, but rather follow the biblical principle, ‘You shall know them by their fruits.’ Ask what they have done”, Cruz said, going on to list Trump’s long history of donating to Democrats and supporting traditionally Democratic causes. Cruz pointed out that Trump once stated support for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the bank bailout opposed by many conservative activists.
Cruz had taken his shot against Tump’s “New York values” during last week’s debate and missed, incurring successful return fire in the form of a reference by Trump to New Yorkers’ heroism on September 11, 2001.
But Cruz said he believes the campaign is entering a “different phase”, where voters will take a closer look at candidates’ records – particularly Trump’s.
Cruz, who suddenly has started criticizing Trump after seven months of refusing to do so, essentially offered SC voters a roadmap to vet him.
Cruz questioned whether Trump is a true conservative, noting donations he’s made to Democrats over the years, including $50,000 in 2010 to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff to President Barack Obama.
Cruz and Trump are in a tough battle to win Iowa. “I am not. Canadians are rugged and outdoorsy, where I myself am mostly made of pudding”, Killam said.
‘I lived in New York City, Manhattan, all my life, ‘ Trump says. It is clear that both Trump and now the Establishment fear a surging Cruz and are doubling down in their attacks against him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. “I told you so”, Trump tweeted, referring to a lawsuit filed by a Houston man challenging the eligibility of Cruz, who was born in Canada to an American mother, to be president. “I want to make America great again…” They were very confused: ‘Well, what are these NY values of which you speak?’ ” Cruz said. “But the poll numbers have”, Cruz told the SC audience.
Cruz was referring to a short video from a 1999 “Meet the Press” interview, touted by Cruz after the debate, in which Trump himself showcased his NY values.
