Star Wars The Force Awakens: China Release Date Breaks Box Office Records
Li Duoyu, a noted film critic also known as Zifeiyu, said that despite Disney’s high expectations after Saturday’s debut, the movie’s box office dropped on Sunday to $19.8 million.
“Fast & Furious 7”, China’s top-earning foreign movie, earned $182 million during its opening weekend in May a year ago. This was enough to push the film past $900 million internationally.
When this movie does come out on DVD it’s not going to feature an extended or “director’s cut”. The movie recently crushed the previous box office record set by Avatar by an impressive margin (James Cameron’s epic sci-fi film made $760.5 million in 318 days).
In other news, it was reported that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” received numerous negative comments from fans who say it was a rip-off of George Lucas’ “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”.
Results in the world’s most populous nation were mixed, especially since studio Disney needs a huge return at the globe’s second largest box office if it is to challenge Avatar’s $2.78bn from 2009/2010.
The Force Awakens hit another worldwide milestone this past weekend, winning its fourth weekend in Germany and becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in the country, not adjusting for inflation. More recently, many noticed that Rey was not one of the figures that were part of a multi-generational Star Wars Monopoly set, leading Hasbro to decide to add her later this year. With numbers like those, the force will most likely be very strong with Star Wars: The Force Awakens final numbers in China.
In Canada and the US, the movie is now the biggest grossing ever and the first to surpass the $800 million mark with a current total of $812 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “The Hateful Eight” ($6.4 million); “The Big Short” ($6.2 million); “Alvin And the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” ($5.7 million); “Joy” ($4.5 million); and “Concussion” ($3 million).
Fifth on the list was “Sisters”, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, which made $7.2 million in its fourth week out.
