Eagles will hire Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson as head coach
The Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly hire Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson as their next head coach.
The appointment can not officially be announced until the Chiefs – who play the New England Patriots in an AFC Divisional play-off game on Saturday – are knocked out of post-season play.
So far, it’s believed that the Eagles haven’t requested permission to interview any coach whose team is still alive in the playoffs other than Pederson. Pederson, a former quarterback, started his first National Football League game with the Eagles and got his first National Football League assistant coaching job in Philadelphia. This was the first time that Pederson was with current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in their professional careers, starting what would be a good relationship in coaching.
There are only three candidates remaining now who they have interviewed and two of them are holdovers from the Kelly regime: Pat Shurmur and Staley. He was with Miami, Green Bay, Philadelphia and Cleveland. “He’s ready to do that and if he has that opportunity, more power to him”. Following the San Francisco 49ers’ hiring of Chip Kelly, the Philadelphia Eagles opted for Doug Pederson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers promoted Dirk Koetter.
The New York Giants replaced Coughlin with 38-year-old Ben McAdoo, their offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.
The Philadelphia Eagles fired Andy Reid three years ago.
For a team loaded with backfield talent in Murray, Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles, the Eagles had to be encouraged by Kansas City’s rushing attack-especially after the Chiefs’ platoon continued producing after Jamaal Charles went down with a season-ending knee injury. On an interesting note for the people that question this hiring, Pederson took over the Chiefs’ playcalling after they started 1-5 and have won since winning their last ten regular season games and last week in the Wild card round against the Houston Texans. With Jamaal going down this year, Maclin missing time, the struggling offensive line, etc. Pederson has had to adjust the offense basically every week. The Eagles have found their man and that’s another job off the market.
Coughlin, during his tour as wide receivers coach of the Eagles helped develop Mike Quick, one of the team’s all-time great receivers.
According to rankings by ESPN, Pederson’s hire was the worst hire of a head coach to this point. Obviously, I wish him the best of luck over there in Philly, and I know he’ll be a great coach. Regardless, Pederson would be a more viable option for the Eagles if Lurie wants a coach to build around.
