Atletico sign Ghana midfielder Mensah from Vitoria

La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ghana midfielder Bernard Mensah from Vitoria Guimaraes on a five year deal.

The 20-year-old Black Star joined Diego Simeone’s squad from Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes on a 6-year-deal.

Other clubs courting the Ghanaian player included the likes of Juventus, Atalanta and Sampdoria in Italy, AS Monaco in France and Portuguese rivals FC Porto.

Atletico confirmed the deal on their official website earlier this evening, they wrote: “Bernard Mensah is an Atletico Madrid player after an agreement was reached with Guimarares”.

Mensah has been handed a six-year contract by Los Rojiblancos and will spend next season on loan at Spanish La Liga side Getafe. “At 20 he is already a full global for Ghana“.

Manchester United had reportedly been interested in bringing Mensah to Old Trafford, with Goal also claiming that Benfica had hoped to win the race for his highly sought-after signature.
