Five children found dead in freezer
The grandmother of the five children, who were all cousins, discovered their dead bodies later that evening.
Police do not suspect foul play.
The tragic death of five children in South Africa has highlighted the dangers of playing with abandoned freezers.
An inquest is believed to have been opened into the incident. “We, as the police, appeal to all parents, or child caretakers, to take responsibility in ensuring the children’s safety at all times”.
“It is alleged that on 19 January 2016 at about 18:00, the grandmother of the children found them all suffocated inside an old freezer in their yard”.
According to police spokeswoman Dimakatso Mooi, they suspect that the children were playing inside when the freezer accidentally locked, trapping the children inside.
Two toddlers were killed after playing with two others inside a disused vehicle in Clermont, west of Durban.
