For Sanders, Iowa is chance to turn revolution into reality
Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ national campaign manager, expressed his delight at the Vermont senator’s surge in numbers, but said that the Democratic presidential hopeful will take nothing for granted, according to Boston Globe. Clinton remains the overall Democratic favorite, but a Sanders victory in Iowa would be an enormous setback.
She also has lost significant support among Democratic women, with her lead over Sanders shrinking from 45 points to 19 points in that group.
While this certainly doesn’t spell doom for Clinton’s candidacy, it feeds into the narrative that (a) voters feel like they already know everything about the former first lady, and (b) there’s an unfamiliar, nearly exciting air to Sanders. Or as Ted Cruz would put it – Are you bleepin’ kidding me?
MSNBC’s Kate Snow and Mark Murray joked Tuesday that they are having flashbacks to 2008 with Hillary Clinton’s tightening race against socialist Sen.
“I think what polls are showing is that here in Iowa we are closing the gap, maybe even a little ahead”, Sanders said. Candidates Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley took the stage for two hours to discuss a variety of issues ranging from gun control to homeland security and foreign policy.
The email said Sanders’s campaign is outspending them on TV in Iowa and New Hampshire “just as voters are starting to pay attention, and the polls are incredibly tight”.
A few supporters held signs that called Hillary Clinton the “Comeback Kid”-a nod to the nickname Bill earned in ’92 when he finished second in the New Hampshire Primary”.
Eight years later, it was a giant embrace from Clinton, who spoke of Obama in terms that Democrats generally reserve for FDR or MLK or JFK. When asked which candidate they would not vote for under any circumstance, 26 percent said O’Malley.
OK, it’s still unlikely Sanders could win.
“One of the amusing things about this campaign, every day, Secretary Clinton is rolling out some other mayor or governor or senator who supports [her], and, yet we’re rolling out the names of hundreds of thousands of working people who support us with individual contributions”, he said. “However, he would still have to overcome Clinton’s demographic advantage in the ensuing contests”, said Murray.
Clinton, while saying the decision to use a private email system was a “mistake,” vehemently denies she did anything improper.
