Oculus Rift Headset Pre-orders now Open
Shortly before the official release date was revealed, Adam Orth of Three One Zero tweeted that Adr1ft will be released on March 28 for Oculus Rift VR and on Steam for non-VR. Oculus announced recently that the Touch wouldn’t be readily available at launch in order to make improvements on the device.
Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey created the virtual reality tech company in 2012, and established its base in Irvine. Luckey compared the Rift to Sony’s PS3 game console Wednesday, which also initially sold for around $600, only to come down in price over time. His comment is a direct response to critics claiming that $599 is too expensive for what Oculus is promising with the Rift. The headsets will cost a whopping $600, which is quite a bit more than Oculus VR’s initial promises (originally they said Oculus Rift would be in the $300-400 range).
If you don’t now have a PC, there is the option to get a full kit with the Rift and a PC that will handle it smoothly, which you can pre-order in February. Well, sort of. After a long wait and many teases and trailers later, Oculus has put its Rift VR headset up for preorder.
Before pre-ordering the Rift from the Oculus Store, customers can check to see if their PCs meet the requirements for the device.
The Wall Street does not expect that the sale of Oculus Rift will have an immediate impact on Facebook. In an interview with Polygon, Luckey said the cost went up as custom hardware was integrated into the headset. This includes the headset itself, a USB sensor for head tracking, a remote for entertainment apps, and an Xbox One controller for gaming.
