Eagles will make Doug Pederson next head coach
Now the question presides: Did the Eagles fumble away their first-choice candidates and scramble to let a “source” spill they were going to hire Pederson, who wasn’t interviewed by any of the nine teams? Kansas City plays at New England on Saturday.
The team was mum on reports the offensive coordinator is in line to replace Chip Kelly as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles did not confirm the hiring, but stated that they have “concluded our search for a head coach“, and said no further interviews are scheduled, according to Bowen. Owner Jeffrey Lurie was looking to rebuild a fractured locker room reeling from defeat and uncertainty.
Meanwhile, the Giants moved toward promoting Coughlin’s offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo, to head coach.
While Tom Coughlin is enticing, fresh off his time in NY with a couple of championships and a backlog of opponent knowledge, age and desire are not exactly non-factors. That was the case for pretty much the first two and a half years of the Reid era in KC.
The rest, as they say, is history… or is it? I’d be shocked if the 69-year-old Coughlin gets the job. Since Philly had not yet announced a head coaching hire, that, of course, seemed odd.
Kelly faces the daunting challenge of transforming the once-proud franchise into an immediate contender again.
Tampa Bay surprised many by firing Lovie Smith last week after just two years on the job.
“Given that Schefter reported three years ago that Kelly had signed a five-year, $32.5 million deal to coach the Eagles, Lurie has avoided millions in buyout obligation to Kelly”. Reid has gone 31-17 with the Chiefs since he left.
Other members of Reid’s offensive staff have also called plays, including spread-game analyst/special projects coach Brad Childress, who called plays for Reid in Philadelphia from 2003-05 before he became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Reid wanted Pederson to work with McNabb, helping the rookie to understand the offense from a quarterback’s perspective. Pederson followed Reid to Kansas City in 2013 and was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Pederson played in the National Football League from 1993-2004, playing with Eagles in 1999 under Reid.
Pederson returned as an assistant coach, from 2009-12, but had no real impact on Reid’s offense. McAdoo also sat down with the Giants.
In Pederson’s bio on the Chiefs’ web site, Reid was asked when he first believed Pederson would make a good coach. It’s not clear if Fajole, who is also a former linebackers coach with the Cleveland Browns, will be Pederson’s DC or a linebackers coach.
