‘Making A Murderer’ Creators Comment On The Presumed Guilt Of Steven Avery
The two directors of the wildly popular Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer told Steven Colbert Tuesday night they did not believe the main subject of their film is guilty.
For many people, the Netflix series has cast doubt on the legal process used to convict them, but authorities involved in the case have said it is biased.
The half-brother of the true crime documentary’s subject Brendan Dassey has put out a hip-hop track, explaining why he thinks Dassey and Steven Avery – who were both convicted of the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005 – are innocent.
Ten years in the making, the documentary follows the case of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man released from prison in 2003 after serving 18 years after DNA evidence exonerated him in a woman’s brutal attack.
The interview includes Stachowski discussing Halbach’s death, Dassey, whom she thinks is innocent, and she says she was supposed to testify against Avery but was never called upon.
Avery filed a notice of appeal last month with the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.
“Making a Murderer”, a 10-episode documentary on the Netflix streaming service, questioned the handling of the case and the motivation of Manitowoc County law enforcement officials.
He also said in his motions that his attorney did not adequately defend him and that a juror bullied others on the panel into a guilty vote. There is a strong feeling amongst viewers of the docu-series that Avery and Dassey were set up by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department and did not commit the murder. Dassey’s case is being argued in federal court by Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth. One of the motions claims a search warrant executed on the property was invalid, meaning evidence from the search should have been inadmissible.
Even more disturbing, Stachowski says she once ate two boxes of rat poison just so she could go to the hospital and get away from Avery.
On Feb. 11, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals will hear the motions Avery filed.
