How “El Chapo” tried to escape during raid on his hideout
See him now? Rolling Stone posted its full 17-minute interview footage with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman on Tuesday, January 12, in which the Mexican drug lord answers Sean Penn’s questions via prerecorded videotape.
President Enrique Pena Nieto’s spokesman, Eduardo Sanchez, said the clandestine meeting between the actors and Guzman was under investigation.
“We investigate actions, we don’t investigate people”, he said.
The Attorney General’s Office said Sunday in a statement that Guzman was told that two arrest warrants from the US are being processed.
Carlos Barragan y Salvatierra, a professor of law at Mexico’s National University, said there would be little ground to prosecute Penn or Del Castillo, unless money or gifts changed hands. The notification was done by agents of the worldwide police agency Interpol at the maximum security prison where Guzman is being held.

“It’s a history-making case that, if successful, could deal a huge blow to today’s most violent drug trafficker”, Coffey said. “The failures only come via corrupting the personnel”, said Jose Alfonso Carreon, who was the deputy director of the high-security jail in Tepic in western Mexico, similar to the one which Guzman escaped from, between 2000 and 2012.
“They try to be with family, and intelligence units take advantage of these contacts to find out where they are”, he said.
