Iggy Pop Joins Forces with Josh Homme for Collaborative Album
Legendary frontman Iggy Pop has teamed up with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone age and Eagles of Death Metal for a secret project that will see its public debut tonight. The album, Post Pop Depression, is slated for released in March with a limited tour consisting of meticulously selected venues to follow.
“Where those records pointed, it stopped…” Homme reached out to Iggy, writing, “Hey, it would be great if we got together and maybe write something sometime – Iggy”.
Pop explained that Post Pop Depression deals with questions of usefulness and legacy as one’s career nears its end. The two began working on the project in January 2015. Queens of the Stone Age’s Dean Fertita contributed guitar and keyboards, and Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders played drums. The band on tour will include the musicians who collaborated in the making of the album along with Troy Van Leeuwen from Queens of the Stone Age, on the guitar, and Matt Sweeney, on the bass. “There won’t be hardly any shows, and they won’t be in big places, and you won’t be able to get a ticket”, says Homme.
When asked about the album’s theme, Iggy Pop said, “What happens after your years of service?” The record is a bit of a spiritual successor to Pop’s visceral and conceptual records such as “Lust For Life and “The Idiot”, which are back in the news again after the death of his collaborator David Bowie”. He adds, “In American life, because it’s so hyper-competitive, what happens when you’re finally useless to everyone except hopefully not yourself?” What happens then? And can you continue to be of use to yourself? This is a much deserved victory lap for a man who’s not sure if he won.
