Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ makes a fashion statement with shirts
CBS News anchor Charlie Rose teased a sitdown interview with Penn while speaking to reporters at a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday. This past Friday, January 8, Mexican marines swooped down on the safe house where El Chapo was hiding, and killed five suspects in the shoot-out.
The Internet had many, many responses to actor Sean Penn’s account of meeting Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, which was published by Rolling Stone on Saturday: shock, anger, derision, astonishment, utter bafflement…
Del Castillo, whose chat name was “Beauty”, answered: “I must confess that I feel protected for the first time”.
After Penn landed in Mexico, Mexican officials asked the USA government for assistance getting cell phone records in an effort to track El Chapo, one of the US law enforcement officials told CNN.
“I don’t sleep much since I saw you“.
You wouldn’t mistake the mustachioed druglord for the bearded, coiffed model.
“Today I believe more in El Chapo Guzman than in the governments that hide the truth from me even though it is painful”, she wrote.
Guzman left his mountain hideout because troops were circling him, but his hope of seeing her again also led him to the city, the officials said on condition of anonymity.
“It’s bad enough of an embarrassment”, says independent analyst and author Sylvia Longmire, “that he escaped the last time they were able to apprehend him. It’s a remarkable story”.
“El Chapo” is now sporting a buzz cut behind bars – and his macho mustache is gone. Penn spent hours talking with Guzman, and Guzman bragged that he had supplied “more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world”. “Weeds” and “Bordertown” both rely heavily on these themes, and del Castillo also played a drug trafficker in the popular telenovela “La Reina del Sur”.
The clandestine meeting in early October to discuss a Rolling Stone magazine article was essential to finding the fugitive drug lord, Mexico’s attorney general said on Monday.
Just six months ago, Guzman used an underground tunnel to escape from Altiplano, near Mexico City.
Four days after Penn’s October 2 interview, soldiers staged fierce operations in the area of Tamazula, Durango, where the meeting with Penn and Del Castillo took place.
The process of extraditing Guzman to the United States, where he faces several indictments in federal courts on drug-trafficking and homicide charges, would be “very lengthy”, the secretary said.
But the Mexican billionaire’s lawyer says that neither the assumption that El Chapo had approved the article or the quote were true, and has demanded to see evidence.
“This was an nearly obsessive interest that turned into another incentive to go down to the city, where he wanted to meet with her”, the official said.
