North Carolina Gov. declares state of emergency for winter storm
“Our goal, with this potential winter storm coming to North Carolina, is to be over-prepared and underwhelmed”.
The airline says its hub in Charlotte is canceling more than 650 flights on Friday and will not keep any planes in Charlotte overnight. The airline, which expects to resume service at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Saturday, made a decision to adopt a cautious stance to prevent passenger inconvenience.
Wednesday’s cold front brought two to four inches of snow to the mountains, while portions of central North Carolina saw a trace of snow.
“What we’re now forecasting is 1 to 3 inches along the MA and New Hampshire border, 4 to 6 inches along the Mass. Pike, particularly in Worcester and points east, and 6 to 8 inches along the south coast”, said Rebecca Gould, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton.
Even before the major storm hit, law enforcement reported the deaths of two people Wednesday in traffic accidents that were blamed on icy roads. Service will begin at 7:30 a.m.
– Gov. Pat McCrory has agreed on a wager involving North Carolina’s “First Dog”, Moe, against Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and his dog, Woody, for Sunday’s NFC Championship game between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.
Some school systems in the state either canceled classes or opened late on Thursday. A winter storm warning covers about a dozen northern counties. This will be a big snow maker for parts of the Northeast, a wintry mix for the Midsouth, and a heavy rain maker for much of Georgia and SC.
Forecasters say frozen precipitation is likely from Thursday through Saturday night.
Some schools are closed and others were opening late Thursday. Rainfall has been above normal since October, increasing the chances for runoff into streams.
The weather service said there may be downed trees and power lines due to the storm, which could bring 10-15 miles per hour winds on Friday and 15-25 miles per hour winds Friday night and Saturday.
