The Oatmeal’s wacky Exploding Kittens debuts on mobile with iOS game
Exploding Kittens now has a 2.5-star rating (out of a possible five stars) on the United Kingdom app store, with several one-star customer reviews complaining at the lack of a single-player mode for when friends aren’t available.
Effectively a form of Russian Roulette, players draw cards from the delightful deck, trying to avoid the Exploding Kitten card. So if you’re looking for your next great game night adventure, look no further than the Apple App Store. If this fateful card is selected, the player who drew it “explodes” and is forced out of the game – unless, of course, he or she is in possession of a defuse card that will allow you to place the Exploding Kitten back into the master deck.
Developed by Elan Lee, Shane Small, and Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens raised $8.7 million on Kickstarter last year-well over their initial goal of $10,000.
The mobile version of game is addictive and incredibly well executed, full of sounds, fun animations and new cards that aren’t in the real world game. This includes the party pack expansion deck and a whole bunch of avatars-Gentleman Tofu, Business Sharl, and Unwell Pizza among them. That’s of course unless you play a defuse card. However, the game is multiplayer only and – at least at launch – the game offers only Bluetooth/WLAN multiplayer; in other words, if you aren’t in the same room with the rest of the players, no kitties will ever explode.
According to the Verge, the mobile port was handled by design studio Substantial, and the developers noted it’s still a work in progress, as several features have been omitted for the initial release. iPhone users can purchase the game for the price of $1.99 ( for the first few days after launch all in-app purchases are free).
