UEFA members gather to hear FIFA candidate Infantino
“I am also much more responsible now than I was before these meetings”, said Infantino, who made a decision to stand after the Uefa president, Michel Platini, was suspended over allegations he accepted a “disloyal payment” from Blatter. Instead, UEFA will wait out Platini’s appeals to overturn his eight-year ban from duty.
Platini has been banned from all football activities for eight years by FIFA judges over an ethics violation.
“UEFA’s national associations also overwhelmingly expressed their support for Gianni and will officially announce their individual positions in due course, respecting their internal formal procedures”.
Platini’s candidacy had been supported by Sheikh Salman, and speculation has focused on a potential deal for Infantino to be the influential Federation Internationale de Football Association secretary general with the Bahraini royal as president.
But UEFA says its executive committee has “decided there will be no UEFA presidential election scheduled until the sports justice appeal bodies, including potentially the Court of Arbitration for Sport, have taken a decision”.
UEFA will run GLT in conjunction with the additional assistant referees system which, Collina noted, had “worked very well and provided clear benefits”.
Infantino will contest the election against Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, Jerome Champagne, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa and Tokyo Sexwale in Zurich on February 26.
“There is no question of any deals”.
Geneva – UEFA’s acting boss Gianni Infantino was set to face the media on Friday after a meeting of Europe’s top football brass, as he gears up his campaign to become FIFA’s president.
NYON, Switzerland Goal-line technology will be used at this year’s European Championship in France, European football body UEFA said on Friday.
Platini had been a long-time opponent of technology but he allowed UEFA officials to review its use for Euro 2016 in his native France before his ban. “It’s called the Champions League”, said Infantino.
