Northern Saskatchewan school in lockdown after shooting
A school in the northern Saskatchewan community of La Loche is in lockdown and dealing with an emergency situation amid reports of a shooting.
The school, which houses 900 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, posted a statement on Friday afternoon warning that an “emergency” was ongoing at the school.
Police are attending a shooting at a school in northern Saskatchewan, where witnesses say they heard several gunshots.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police would not confirm whether a shooting had taken place with local media reporting two deaths.
“I ran outside the school”, Noel Desjarlais, a Grade 10 student, told CBC News. There was lots of screaming, there was about six, seven shots before I got outside. “This is something that you only see on TV most of the time”.
Parents and community members are being asked to stay away from the high school but parents are allowed to go to the elementary school.
Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall expressed his shock and condolences on his Facebook page. “My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, their families and friends and all the people of the community”, his post read.
