Massive Attack Collect App Tracks for New EP
Massive Attack will be touring throughout Europe for the next few weeks, and it looks like they’ll be bringing new music with them.
The app, which is entitled Fantom and works with the iPhone 5s and upwards, uses your location, movement and heartbeat to manipulate the music, along with the time of day and images from the phone’s camera.
The product contains four fresh songs, marking the band’s first fresh material since 2010’s “Heligoland”, but it’s the app’s features that stand out as equally attention-grabbing. By tapping on the “Motion” icon, the app uses a motion sensor to change the beat and effects based on movement and balance.
If you’re into the trip-hoppy antics of Massive Attack, you’re probably starving for new music. If you are stationary then the mix will also reflect this. It should be noted that the pulse-sensitive heartbeat function is only available for users with an Apple Watch.
The credits for the new track “Voodoo in My Blood” suggest the song was made in collaboration with the Scottish band Young Feathers, and “Take It There” credits “thaws”, which could be hinting at a collaboration with Adrian Thaws, aka Tricky, who last made a Massive Attack appearance in 1994. In 2011, Icelandic pop artist Bjork released her eighth album, Biophilia, as a downloaded app. Like Fantom, the app, which is still available to purchase from the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store, allows users to remix all 10 tracks from the album by playing a variety of different mini-games.
