One-year extension for Jaguars’ Gus Bradley, Todd Wash named defensive coordinator
Bradley asked defensive line coach Todd Wash to sit in during conversations with four other candidates.
First, head coach Gus Bradley has been given a one-year extension running through the 2017 season.
Bradley said that he felt last season’s promotion helped Wash prepare for this role as defensive coordinator.
Wash has 20 years of coaching experience, including nine years in the National Football League, the Jaguars said.
Wash replaces Bob Babich, who was sacked earlier this month after Jacksonville gave up the second-most points (448) in franchise history.
“For an organization that we believe is ready to make its move, extending Gus through the 2017 season provides our club with much-needed stability in every respect”, Caldwell said today.
The prevailing logic is sound – Bradley only had one year left on his contract and in a year when the Jaguars absolutely need to win, it’s going to be tough to recruit free agents to play for a head coach who might be gone the next year. “That’s some of things we didn’t do as a unit [last season] and that starts with me also”. “I appreciate [owner] Shahid [Khan] supporting this approach as we enter a pivotal season with high expectations at every level of the organisation”. “And just because [Gus] is heading into the offseason with one year left on his contract, that doesn’t mean he’ll coach next year with one year left on his contract”.
Team owner Shad Khan announced before the team’s season finale that he would be bringing Bradley back for a fourth season.
Jacksonville finished 5-11 this season, two wins better than 2014. Prior to the 2015 season his duties were expanded to run-game coordinator.
Aaron Whitecotton, assistant to the defensive staff the past three seasons, was promoted to assistant defensive line coach.
Mark Ellenz has also been named the team’s director of college scouting.
