4 dead in Saskatchewan high school shooting
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says five people have been killed and two critically injured in a shooting in a northern Saskatchewan Dene community.
Both the La Loche Community School and elementary school in northern Saskatchewan are in lockdown, according to the school’s Facebook page.
Responding to the shooting, The Royal Canadian Police said that the shooter was male, police did not clarify his age, and was taken into custody outside the school at 1:47 p.m., and a gun was seized. It left five people dead and two others in critical condition, but the shooter is in police custody.
“Today’s victory was for that community, and a quick recovery and all of Canada, and I’m sure the world is behind you”, he said. La Loche is a town of about 3,000 people.
“Words can not express my shock and sorrow at the horrific events today in La Loche”, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said in a statement. “There was lots of screaming. My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, their families and friends and all the people of the community”, he said in a statement.
Two other people killed were identified as brothers of the gunman. “We all grieve with and stand with the community of La Loche and all of Saskatchewan on this bad and tragic day”.
“I ran outside the school”.
Levy revealed few details and wouldn’t give the names of the suspect or victims, whether the shooter and victims were students and what kind of weapon was used, saying the integrity of the investigation had to be protected. “I ran outside the school”, Desjarlais said.
“All I heard was cops running around in the school”. A cellphone video taken by one resident and broadcast by the CBC showed students walking away from the school through the snow-covered ground and emergency personnel moving in.
It was unclear how many died at the school. Extra doctors and nurses have been sent to treat patients in Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority’s 16-bed hospital, said spokesman Dale West. Teddy Clark, chief of the Clearwater River Dene Nation, said that his daughter told him about the shooting, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported. “My own nieces and nephews were inside the school”.
“Parents and community members are asked to not attend the Dene High School at this time due to the active, ongoing incident”, police said.
