Oscars: Will fifth time be a charm for Leonardo DiCaprio?
The Academy Award nominations for 2016 are out with Leonardo Di Caprio’s The Revenant leading the race. “2015 Oscar-winner Inarritu will compete again with George Miller (‘Mad Max: “Fury Road”), Tom McCarthy (‘Spotlight”), Adam McKay for “The Big Short” and Lenny Abrahamson for “Room”.
His competitors in the best actor category include Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”, Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl”.
The Revenant has Scored 12 nominations for this year’s Oscars in the best actor, best Picture and best Director categories.
Leonardo was recently awarded the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama Golden Globe for his role, with The Revenant also taking home the Best Picture, Drama honor that night.
“I think it’s a shame there’s not more diversity on the screen because films are a mirror of humanity, we should be seeing ourselves there, all of us”. The 88th Academy Awards will be presented at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 28.

“We have been actively bringing in more diversity into our membership”. But in a year when some wondered if “Star Wars” could get any major awards love, a film editing nomination _ along with score, visual effects and two sound nominations _ gives it a battlefield victory.
Nick Hornby is nominated for best adapted screenplay for Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn, with fellow British author Alex Garland honoured for his original screenplay for Ex Machina. However, movies should be a “mirror of humanity”, and the absence of non-white actors among this year’s Acting nominees is therefore regrettable.
But Isaacs, who is black, added that the Oscar nominations are part of a much broader conversation in the entertainment industry about diversity – and that change would happen, albeit slowly. Despite being nominated for other awards, Smith failed to be recognized by the Academy for his role in the film.
The best supporting actor nominees are Christian Bale (“The Big Short“), Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies“), Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight“) and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”).
As every year, there were some notable snubs – and surprises. But, according toSlash Film, the seventh episode of the “Star Wars” franchise should have been nominated for Best Picture.
