Winter weather, wind advisories in effect
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon for the five boroughs of NY and Long Island, with “heavy snow along with strong and potentially damaging winds”.
Residents should also ensure that they do not shovel or snow blow their snow back into the roadway after it has been plowed as this creates a hazardous condition.
The day is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high near 41 degrees and a 50 percent chance of precipitation.
The county on Thursday declared a snow emergency that will take effect 3 p.m. Friday, meaning parking is prohibited along all county roads marked as Snow Emergency Routes and all vehicles on the road must have all-weather tires or tire chains.
Peak snow rates within the area Saturday will average about 1 inch per hour and some areas will see up to 2 inches per hour fall, Elliott said.
Winds are expected to be between 15 miles per hour and 25 miles per hour with higher gusts and could damage trees and make driving hard. “These winds are expected to generate seas near 20 feet in the Atlantic coastal waters off New Jersey and DE on Saturday”. Montgomery County Recreation will close all community and swim centers at 2 p.m. Friday and will announce Saturday and Sunday closures later.
