John Kerry: Some sanctions relief money for Iran will go to terrorism
Kerrys trip is expected to last nine days and to encompass stops in Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Laos, Cambodia, and China.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the Obama administration will seek a major boost in funding for global refugee support and press for at least 10 new countries to offer resettlement programs.
The three were allegedly taken just as Kerry and Zarif were finalizing the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal and the release of five United States prisoners held in Iran.
When asked by United States broadcaster CNBC, however, whether a portion of the funds unblocked by the lifting of the nuclear sanctions would be directed to organizations Washington labels as “terrorist”, Kerry replied: “I think that some of it will end up in the hands of the IRGC or of other entities, some of which are labelled terrorists”. “You know, to some degree, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that every component of that can be prevented”.
The United States government on Friday called on governments to strengthening the worldwide response to global refugee crisis.
Washington has not commented publicly on reports the three were kidnapped by an Iranian-backed Shiite militia, but Kerry confirmed he had raised the case with Tehran. He said both the Middle East and the world are safer because of it.
“What I’m trying to do and what President Obama is trying to do principally is move us away from that kind of confrontation and put to test whether or not we can find cooperation”, he said. “We acknowledge that, but we have the strongest security relationship with Israel on a day to day basis that has ever existed and I believe Israel will tell you that”. “It is not money-based, and a whole lot of money isn’t going to make a difference in a whole lot of places”.
Despite signs of thaw, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned his country to remain wary of American “deceit”, and Iranian leaders have denounced the new ballistic missile sanctions.
The EU’s counter-terrorism coordinator chief Gilles de Kerchove said ISIS’ military losses in Syria and Iraq may prompt some of its leaders to relocate to strife-torn Libya where they would face less pressure.
Ayotte, who faces a tough reelection fight next year, was one of several Senate Republicans who threatened to introduce new sanctions against Iran if the administration does not impose tougher, multilateral sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism.
“The fact is there is nothing, absolutely nothing, more demoralizing and disempowering to any citizen of any nation than the belief the system is rigged against them and that people in positions of power are – to use a diplomatic term of art – crooks who are stealing the future of their own people”, Kerry said.
