Runaway cow fleeing from slaughterhouse finds refuge in animal sanctuary
“It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure”. Cow on the loose-Jamaica Queens.
But dedicated animal rights activist Mike Stura camped outside the slaughterhouse with a truck and his trailer to bargain for Freddie’s life.
Freddie, like all cows and all other animals, didn’t want to die for our dinner. It too was eventually captured.
Freddie – who was caught on video scurrying on busy Jamaica Avenue – will join about 75 other animals in his sanctuary, including 18 other lucky cows.
Stura slept in his auto overnight after making the trip from Wantage, New Jersey, to Queens.
“I was able to get the owner (of Archer Halal Live Poultry) on the phone right away and at first he was pretty receptive”, Stura, a 49-year-old truck driver and mechanic, said. “But then he said the animal was purchased for a family for an event and he thought there’d be a problem”.
“I impressed upon (Freddie’s owner) several times that 38 billion cattle go to the food industry”, Stura told the newspaper. “It’s nice if one lives once in a while”.
“Say hello to Freddie…”, the Skylands Animal Sanctuary said in a Facebook post Friday.
Following the cow’s dramatic escape, members of animal rescue group PETA held a protest outside the slaughterhouse demanding its release, according to the New York Daily News. To care and support the animals, visit the Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue website here.
