Oroville celebrates civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr
While many are celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. one city councilwoman is remembering who he was as a man and how they came to meet. For Wright, this holiday is more than just a celebration. Last July, organizers got their wish as SC swiftly removed the flag which had flown at the capitol for more than 50 years after what police said was a racially motivated shooting that claimed nine lives at a church in Charleston.
Wright is a Lake Charles resident who lived through the Civil Rights era.
Adams says this service goes both ways, with her college students able to share their knowledge with high school students, and the younger students bettering themselves.
“I have a right to vote”, said L. Micah O. Dexter, II, President of the Syracuse Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Volunteer Mary Hooper brought all four of her kids with her to teach them the importance of giving back.
“I’m just glad that we’re keeping him in mind and in our hearts and as a Nation taking the day to honor him”, said Kimberly James.
Michael McDonald, 18, attends church with Wright. “A very honorable man. He had a great history with our people”.
“The majority of the time when I’m out, people are positive”.
Holland said King and his holiday influenced her to keep making a difference in the world.
“I have a lot of hope”.
“It was really Coretta that made me the accidental driver”.
