Sundance Film Festival Kicks Off Thursday in Park City
What needed to happen, they asked, for these tragedies to stop?
Robert Redford, the godfather of independent film, did not flinch as he declared that film “is not in a good place”.
The 2016 Sundance film festival runs 21 January – 31 January.
Both a showcase and marketplace for independent film, the Sundance Film Festival draws emerging and established artists from around the world seeking a wider audience for their work, and distributors hungry for fresh content. HBO and Netflix have already acquired films making their world premieres in Park City this week.
Of course this year the NAPTE buddies and avowed mutual admirers were here for the debut of Norman Lear: Just Another Version Of You on opening night 2016.
“As a filmmaker, I don’t necessary want to shoot my own films”, says Yung Chang, a Montreal-based documentarian. As his exquisite 2014 Sundance entry, Love Is Strange, showed (it was our favorite movie of that year), Sachs doesn’t really do quirk as much as he does fluid, naturalistic looks at people, place, and time. Here is a clip from the film with David Wheeler who lost his son, Ben, to the violence.
The film drops at a time of continued racial tension in the U.S, and against the backdrop of accusations that the movie industry is not diverse enough. “I was trying to create a portrait of a collective trauma, and do it in a way that becomes universal”.
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) I don’t know whether Oswald was the man who did it. It’s about carnival workers who are kidnapped and held hostage.
Last year, “it was women and young people”. There was no internet, so the story of the newscaster who shot herself live on air were just kind of passed along.
“We also know that there’s a strong audience for independent films”. Written by Sundance favorite Todd Solondtz, this comedy features a dazzling magical dachshund who brings joy and comfort to strangers. All the movies mentioned above all actually cost far more than advertised by the time they got in theaters, because costs for post-production, sound, production design, professional cinematography, travel, accommodations and union labor have stayed the same or spiraled up. What I mean is I’m not focused on that part. “It’s just a portrait of America right now”. “Are they ready to say “yes” to those sorts of projects?” I thought it was different. “It’s burgeoning and burgeoning, and we are horrified and move on, then are horrified and move on again”. Looking back now, LaLonde says that was for the best.
Gun safety has occasionally flickered across the Sundance radar. But these new movies seethe in a different way, complementing and compounding one another. Individually, they are admirable, but together, they are an endlessly fascinating couple.
The documentary “Speaking is hard“, begins with the recent mass shootings in San Bernardino, California, and ends with a plea for gun control.
The festival’s offerings often serve as a bellwether of the social and political issues at play in the US, according to Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper.
But whether these works of cinema can sway opinion is an open question. As part of the new alliance, Kodak is providing film to the Sundance Institute’s Archives, which hosts a wealth of images, tapes and artifacts preserved over its rich 35-year history. “Now there’s a lot that’s permeating our whole reality”.
“And then I saw it and it changed my perception”. So, right now, I’m completely guessing with these five movies.
The film has multiple screenings starting January 25 at the famous Utah film festival. Equity is one of two movies that Purefoy is set to star in at the beginning of 2016, as we are also going to see him in High-Rise.
Visitors to the Samsung Studio will have access to the Sundance Film Festival Selfie, and will experience the brand’s full range of product innovations including the Gear VR, Galaxy View, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy Tab S2, Gear S2, SUHD TVs and home appliances.
