San Antonio marches to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
Before the church services started this evening, community members joined together to march around the block with signs showing respect to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
King also made a reference to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, urging people to stop being “distracted”.
Thanks to President Ronald Regan, who signed Martin Luther King Jr Day into law in 1983, all 50 states recognize this day as a national holiday across America. That commemoration caps more than a week of events meant to celebrate the slain civil rights icon’s legacy under the theme: “Remember!” First Selectman Rudy Marconi said, “They exemplify all of the traits that Dr. King stood for: generosity, empathy, kindness and altruism”.
“Some of the violence that goes on here, it’s very sad that us blacks are killing each other the way they are”, she said.
Despite the temperatures being in the upper 20’s, the young children picked up 15 bags of trash and seven bags worth of items to be recycled.
Mrs. Parkin will touch on this subject more in depth in April when she teaches the 1960s and Civil Rights Movement.
“We wouldn’t even be here if Martin Luther King never did what he did”, 11-year-old AJ Baxter said.
The White House says each bag included a copy of “Oh the Things You Can Do that are Good for You!” by Dr. Seuss.
“He symbolizes unity, equal rights, improving ourselves and coming together”, Erika Pierce, attendee, said. “And the walls of segregation left many Americans stuck without a chance to get ahead in life, not just in the South but everywhere, including in our cities”.
Naming a street in King’s honor reminds residents and drivers of his message year ’round.
King lived and worked in the capital city, preaching at a church now named after him. “It’s a day to work for social justice”, said Ramona Harris, 56, a surgical technician who lives in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood.
