The white actors matter Academy Awards
“The problem is with the Hollywood movie-making system”, she told Entertainment Tonight.
While many people are up in arms about rich entertainers boycotting and wanting diversity at the awards ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does not reflect the moviegoing public when it comes to the types of people actually watching films.
In her speech, Viola Davis said that the only barrier that separates actors of color from others is opportunity. Last year, “Selma” failed to get an Oscar nod.
However, her absence isn’t because she plans to boycott the event but because she’s “gonna be on vacation”.
Charlotte Rampling, who’s nominated this year for her role in a movie you haven’t seen, made the mistake of saying the #OscarsSoWhite boycott campaign is racist. You can’t vote for an actor because he’s black.
“There are many urgent matters that I must deal with” in her district, Lawrence said, “and I question whether a boycott is the best course of action”.
Davis became the first woman of color to win an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a drama series for her role in ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder last fall.
Oscar victor Reese Witherspoon expressed her “disappointment” on her Facebook page: “So disappointed that some of 2015’s best films, film-makers and performances were not recognised”, she wrote. I thought he was wonderful.
“The Academy is “the” establishment, it’s the most visible representation of the film business, but it is not the film business”, Stephen Galloway from The Hollywood Reporter said. “You could probably line up all the A-list Black actresses out there [and] they probably don’t make what one A-list white woman makes in one film”. This touched off several days of commentary about possible solutions to the Academy’s diversity problems, some more realistic than others.
Whether or not its intentions are noble, the Academy seems eager to stem the tide of negativity rolling in ahead of the February 28th ceremony, which will be hosted by African-American comedian Chris Rock.
Some of the snubbed actors this year included Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson, Idris Elba, and Michael B. Jordan.
