Residents call for revitalization project for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
“Fifty to 100 years, I’d say Martin Luther King’s dream, becomes reality”, predicts Harper.
Mae Parker-Harris, a co-organizer for the annual march, noted they have been conducting the marches for some two decades with a specific goal and objective.
While people have been distracted by TV reality shows and music “that tears down instead of uplifts”, many injustices have occurred and “we’re about to create right here in this civilized society the wild, wild west with guns”, said King’s daughter, the Rev. Bernice King.
“He had a sense that when you bring people together you can make things happen and that’s a great legacy and think that is something we should remember”, Dennis Donohue, a former Salinas Mayor and county supervisor candidate, said about King.
Despite the temperatures being in the upper 20’s, the young children picked up 15 bags of trash and seven bags worth of items to be recycled. First Selectman Rudy Marconi said, “They exemplify all of the traits that Dr. King stood for: generosity, empathy, kindness and altruism”.
San Antonio police did not immediately return a message Monday on number of participants in the march organized by the city’s MLK Jr. So one of the key legacies that don’t speak about every day is speaking truth to power.
The civil rights icon had a major impact in Atlanta, which was his hometown, and for the 48th year, Dr. King’s former church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, is holding a commemorative service.
“…By the time you finish skating…by the time you get warmed up, you won’t even feel the cold”, said Matcie Foster, also a member of the “Freedom Skaters”. She says these activities keep kids out of trouble and helps them achieve.
People across MI are honoring the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. with acts of service, including delivering bottled water to residents of Flint amid the city’s drinking water crisis. Growing up, her father was a civil rights activist, so naturally Dailey said she chose to follow in his footsteps. “I want people to be involved with what King was about and his vision 365 days a year”.
