1 loud shot: Survivor describes movie theater shooting
Police chief Jim Craft said: “The quick law enforcement response forced him back into the theatre”.
He flew a large Confederate flag outside his home and a Nazi swastika outside a bar he owned, and put “doomsday” fliers in his neighbors’ mailboxes, urging them to pool resources for the coming global economic collapse, his former neighbor Rick Chancey said.
They said Houser, who comes from the neighbouring state of Alabama, had been in the Lafayette area since early July, staying at a motel where they found disguises, including glasses and wigs. “It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and escaping”, he said, adding Houser’s vehicle, a blue Lincoln Continental, was parked outside the theatre near an exit. Two people, Mayci Breaux, 21, and Jillian Johnson, 33, died of gunshot wounds. Five remain in the hospital – one in a critical condition – but police said all are expected to recover. Four others have been treated and released.
The city marshal said the gunman turned the gun on himself.
“We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker”, Katie Domingue told The Advertiser. “He was opposed to women having a say in anything”, said one. Despite the chaos, or possibly because of it, she didn’t hear screaming, hers or anyone else’s, until she was out of the theater.
Broussard, a student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, says he felt lucky. “You could talk with him a few minutes, and you would know he had a high IQ but there was a lot missing with him”.
“Even though she was shot in the leg, she had the presence of mind to pull the fire alarm to help save other lives”, Jindal said.
“They heard a couple of pops and didn’t know what it was”, Randall Mann said.
“It is just completely unbelievable that someone could go in and destroy my life then destroy themselves”.
“She hit the floor immediately”, Manning said of his daughter, who escaped along with her friend but was “traumatized”.
Clark grabbed her 5-year-old daughter and ran, she said, leaving her purse and phone on the concession stand counter.
Stories of heroism emerged.
“Her friend literally jumped over her, and in her account actually saved her life”, Jindal said at a press conference, after he visited with victims at a hospital.
In 2008, relatives in Georgia accused him of family violence and sought a restraining order against him that mentioned a history of mental disorders, including manic depression and or bipolar disorder, according to court documents.
Filing for divorce in March, his estranged wife, Kellie Houser, said he lashed out at her, asked for money and said “I’d better watch out because he always wins”.
Houser was evicted from his home in Phenix City last year, then returned to throw paint, pour concrete down the plumbing and tamper with a gas line, Taylor said. Louisiana State Police insist that the murderer has not directly targeted any other establishments in Louisiana. One person underwent surgery and “was not doing well”, Craft said.
“It wasn’t to die in this theater”, said Col. Michael Edmonson, of the Louisiana State Police.
Gunfire broke out at the Grand Theater, where about 100 people were watching the film “Trainwreck” at 7 p.m. local time Thursday.
Governor Jindal, a presidential hopeful, called the shooting “an bad night for Louisiana”. “I think it’s all about prayers for the victims and the families And showing support for the community”, Nugent said. “We can hug these families. We just pray for them and we’re thinking about them”, Rem Houser told Artz.
President Barack Obama was briefed on Air Force One by Lisa Monaco, his homeland security adviser, while on his way to Africa.
Houser opened fire on Thursday night killing two women and wounding nine more people during a screening of comedy Trainwreck at a crowded cinema before killing himself. The jury found Thursday that the death penalty is justified, and is hearing evidence about Holmes’ schizophrenia before issuing a sentence.
